Turn the hourglass

When those final grains of sand

fall through the hourglass of the year.

Raise the glass, turn it around,

dance and cheer.

For this is the beginning

not the straggly end with threads left frayed.

This new, fresh start,

not stale and decayed.

Let the winds blow away

cobwebs of yesterday.

Clear thoughts

for a New Year’s Day.

Let us walk

with a swagger and a sway.

Taking strides,

not tentative steps

into tomorrow.

Let us play.

Don't look back

in fear or regret.

Look forward instead

to what lays ahead.

A future where you

get to see another sunrise

over a new, fresh beautiful day,

another rainfall,

which clears away the dirt,

another moonlit night

holding you tight

against the hurt.

Another smile.

When it feels like gravity

has pulled the last one

down to the earth.

When that clock strikes,

and voices raise a cheer.

As your thoughts

soar through the air,

exploding in colour,

a firework of hope

for the new year.

Don't jump in fear,

don't bask in fright.

Embrace the night.

For it is the beginning

of the next chapter

in this grand

exciting adventure

we call life.

Broken heart strings

Two different songs,

completely out of sync.

We spent so long

trying to make

the harmonies link,

when the whole soundscape

was being played in a different key.

Where the lyrics you sung

were not ones

written on the page I see.

Our rhythm was out of time,

yours beat so fast,

mine, slowly chimed.

Two songs played

simultaneously.

Each one a wonder

when heard individually,

but when the sounds blended

together,

a cacophony,

played by a twisted

demonic orchestra.

A musical monstrosity.

Those heartstrings were played,

on a harp made of glass.

The shining light cast out

dazzled and glared

across my eyes.

Blinding me to reality.

Twisting the image,

a window of fantasy

and still the orchestra played

fingers frayed

by the razor strings

of the song set free.

Happy Apocalyptica New Year

"So, it's New Year’s Eve,

are we gonna do anything tonight?"

"Y'know I just fancy staying in

and watching it

all on TV for a change.

Transport is a pain,

the weather has been terrible,

 and it definitely gives rain,

and I literally have nothing to wear"

"Yeah, I was gonna mention that.

You could at least wear a towel."

"Sorry, my robe got a tad grim last night,

downsides of the job I guess"

"Well, I guess we could grab some food,

watch the fireworks on TV,

and stand outside at midnight"

"As long as you don't

try to snog me again this year.

To be honest I've seen millions

of new year’s eves

and whilst they have got more interesting

since these human learnt to blow shit up,

once you've seen one you've seen them all.

Though they are still

a million times better than

when those dinosaurs walked around,

boring bastards"

Pestilence and Famine walk in, giggling,

then take one look at Death and burst out

into uncontrolled laughter.

"Erm boss, your bones are showing.

Are we out tonight, come on guys,

we need a good night!"

War and Death reply

"of course"
